Indicted, without trial, at the behest of Napoleon Bonaparte for obscenity, the poor old Marquis couldn't catch a trick. He wrote Justine whilst imprisoned in the Bastille in 1787 and published it anonymously yet still managed to get himself into deep waters for his blasphemy.

Justine is the story of 'Therese' (Justine), who reveals her sordid sexual history to the Countess de Lorsagne in a tavern. Set before the French Revolution it is a battle of virtue versus vice.
